Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are fillers based on hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in the skin but breaks down as part of the aging process. When this happens wrinkles can form and people can lose volume in the face.
These fillers, sometimes known as HA fillers are in gel form when injected, usually into the area of the cheeks, lips, and mouth. Treatments can usually begin on the day of treatment, but when you schedule your appointment it is recommended to ask if there are any over the counter medications that should avoided like aspirin or ibuprofen, or St. John's wort and find out if there is any conflict with any prescribed medications. It is also recommended that you not smoke before treatment and not to drink alcohol in the days or week before treatment.
HA fillers can have differing textures, even within brands, that work better on certain areas depending on what is needed, whether filling fine lines and wrinkles, adding definition of bony areas like the chin or cheekbones, or adding plumpness to your cheeks. If you are considering a dermal filler as a treatment, Dr Daniel Barker can help you decide which treatment is best for you in a free medspa consultation.
